Fontenay le Comte

Let's start with a little tour of the capital of the Sud Vendée and the Bas Poitou region, Fontenay-le-Comte. On offer is a rich and interesting heritage, allowing a good part of the history of Bas Poitou to unfold.

You can visit the town on foot or by bike. For our part, we prefer exploring on foot, which means you can take your time.

An ideal starting point for your exploration

Depart from Place Viète, the safest place to park; in principle, there's always room.

Just a reminder: as our campsite is open all year round, we accept stays of more than one month for those who need to rent a nearby chalet or mobile home.

Discovering our religious and river heritage

Let's continue our exploration of Fontenay-le-Comte in the direction of L'Église Notre-Dame, which can be visited at certain times. It's a magnificent building that dominates the town.

The river Vendée runs through the town. Here is a view of the very attractive Quai Victor Hugo footbridge. Although the photos don't show it, the town is generally well flowered, which gives it even more cachet.

Between historic fountains and mysterious legends

Now head down a few steps towards the Fontaine des Quatre-Tias. Why this name? Without revealing all the secrets of the town's historic heritage, you should know that the water in the fountain flows through 4 pipes («tiass», pipes in patois).

As you stroll along, the Hôtel de la Sénéchaussée comes into view. Don't expect to find any tourist accommodation here: this building once belonged to a private individual. A whole legend surrounds this place, just like some of the buildings in the southern Vendée, which are said to have been built in a single night by the fairy Mélusine (the snake fairy), a beautiful representation of whom you can see on the Tour Mélusine in Vouvant.

City centre highlights and panoramic views

Here are a few more monuments to the town's rich heritage: the arcaded houses of Place Belliard. Finally, let's finish our little stroll with a view of the Bastion de Guinefole, which offers a breathtaking view of the town.

Prepare your stay at the campsite

On your arrival at the campsite, for those who are interested in a more exhaustive and, above all, real visit, we will give you a small brochure listing all the places of interest not to be missed.

We would like to remind you that Camping les Rulières is open all year round. If you would like to stay at a low price in Fontenay-le-Comte, we can provide mobile homes or chalets.
